03.08.23

Ethics & Professional Responsibility Chair Ronald C. Minkoff is quoted in the article, “Top NY Judge Misled Lawmakers To Justify DiFiore’s Detail” published by Law360. The article discusses the recent testimony by acting Chief Administrative Judge Tamiko Amaker, that defended former Chief Judge Janet DiFiore’s seven-year multimillion-dollar security detail. Filings in a previous case reveal that the former chief judge violated judicial ethics by writing a letter to prosecutors that invoked her judicial office and authority in a victim impact statement. Ron is quoted saying, “Her suggestion that the weight of an entire branch of government is being brought to bear goes beyond what is proper.”

Ron notes, “This is why it is so important that a judge submitting a Victim Impact Statement make clear that they are acting only in their personal capacity, lest their actions bring the entire judiciary into disrepute.”
