The article discusses the recent phenomenon where US companies have reimplemented cookie banners and consent pop-ups on their websites in an attempt to protect themselves from privacy lawsuits. In addition to being damaging to the user experience, website pop-ups and cookie banners have not proven to be an effective privacy strategy. Daniel is quoted saying, “These banners are regularly repackaged and marketed by consent management platforms as US privacy-complaint.”
Daniel adds, “Companies that deploy cookie banners may believe that they have satisfied ‘Do Not Sell’ and other opt-out obligations under US law when they actually have not.”
